The sustainable Lampivaara Amethyst Mine is possibly one of the only gemstone mines in the world that welcomes visitors. Located on the top of a hill at the edge of the stunning Pyhä-Luosto National Park, the mine offers a unique experience surrounded by breathtaking snow-covered Lappish landscapes.
Your adventure begins with a 1.5-hour transfer from our agency at Maakuntakatu 29–31. Equipped with special mining tools, you will board a Snowcat — a large snow vehicle — that will transport you up the hill to the amethyst mine.
Upon arrival, professional guides will introduce the history of the mine and explain the traditional mining process. After the introduction, you will head to the mining area and try your hand at digging for your very own lucky amethyst, a gemstone that has been waiting nearly 2 billion years to be discovered.
During your visit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Arctic wilderness, with the snow-covered landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National Park creating a truly unforgettable backdrop. In winter, you may also have the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights during your time in Lapland.
After your amethyst adventure, descend back down the hill by Snowcat and warm yourself up with a cup of hot blueberry juice and a traditional Lappish reindeer meat sandwich. At the end of this unforgettable experience, you can take home your own discovered amethyst as a special souvenir — if it fits inside your closed fist, it is yours to keep free of charge.
Finally, we will return you safely back to your hotel after this unique Arctic experience.
